Each month at New England 360 Fitness our monthly theme for Corporate Clients rotates around various topics impacting employee health and wellness. For the month of August, we’re diving into Digital Wellness as it’s a great month to get outside, enjoy summer, and limit screen time.

Digital wellness is a thing, believe it or not, and finding ways to improve your digital wellness is something I recommend you work on now, before tech really takes over our lives.

Finding something called “digital balance” is important not just for working adults, but for the young people watching everything we do.

As with anything, there’s no cookie-cutter approach to finding your unique digital balance. But here are a few simple strategies you can start to implement right away.

1. Instead of going straight to your phone first thing in the morning, begin your day with something non-screen related. Things like reading a book, taking a few deep breaths, drinking a large glass of water, journaling, or going for a walk.

2. This may sound simple, but you also may not realize you’ve done this before….but don’t bring your phone into the bathroom! Being mindful of this alone can jumpstart your way to better digital health!

3. When you put your phone down, put it face down. Not seeing notifications light up will help ease you into more time without your device.

4. Get to know your FOCUS FEATURES. These are settings you can customize on your phone so that when you set your focus to a certain situation, only what YOU WANT to be notified of will show. This is a GREAT way to improve your digital wellness with the accountability built into the device you’re using. Almost like having a coach!

Addiction to digital devices and tech has been proven to have negative effects on our adolescents. If we don’t lead by example, the future remains uncertain.

But it’s not just adolescents and children – addiction to devices and tech in adults can lead to chronic stress which can wreak havoc on every system in your body. Unfortunately all this does is pave the way for illness and disease…

The good news is that we can take steps to manage our digital use. Despite being a relatively new topic in the health and wellness industry, it’s an important one to address sooner rather than later.
