What is Yoga

Yoga originated in India, but it is impossible to determine the exact time of its origin. Many believe it has been around as long as human beings have walked the earth. The word “yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit root “yuj,” meaning to unite or connect. In practice, yoga is the union of the mind, body and spirit. Through various methods, yoga seeks to bring about awareness and compassion for the self and for others, fostering a deeper connection between our bodies, minds and spirits.

The purpose of a yoga practice is to create a state of true relaxation that helps the body maintain optimal health, and if necessary, prepares it for healing. Yoga is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, physical ability, strength or flexibility.

Full Spectrum Wellness offers hatha yoga, which focuses primarily on a series of physical movements (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama) and meditation. All movements are safe, natural for the body and appropriate for all levels, including beginners.

The benefits of yoga include increased energy, productivity, strength and flexibility. A regular yoga practice can help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as physical discomforts such as back or shoulder pain. Practicing yoga can also foster a sense of vitality, joy and calm.
