The 2010 National Nutritional Awareness Month Celebrates “Nutrition from the Ground Up – a return to the basics”. This promotion from the American Dietetic Association means choosing more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and beans to create a healthful eating plan.  Here are some of my healthful ways to improve your nutrition from the Ground Up most days of the week!

  • When dining out, eat at restaurants that offer local produce.  Check out… https://agriculture.nh.gov/publications/documents/farmtorestaurant.pdf
  • If you can’t pronounce the ingredient on a food label, it’s probably an additive, a man made chemical, so skip it!
  • Shop at your local Farmer’s Market for fresh array of vegetables and fruit.  Farmer’s Market season is right around the corner.
  • Avoid processed foods, ~ boxed meal mixes, canned soups, sugary breakfast cereals, processed meats, frozen dinners; they are generally loaded with too much salt, sugar and fat!
  • Shop the perimeter of the grocery store, that’s where you’ll find the more healthier & natural food items.
  • Don’t overcook your veggies, as to retain their valuable vitamins and nutrients.
  • Forgo the sodas and sugary drinks, these are wasted calories.  Instead drink low fat milk and water.
  • Eat baked or broiled fish at least two days of the week. ü  Substitute a meat dish or two for one with beans, ~ chickpeas, lentils, black eyed peas, etc; these legumes are a great source of protein and loaded with fiber, and other nutrients which are good for your heart health!

Remember, you are what you eat, so go natural for your health’s sake!  For more information on healthy eating and recipes, visit the American Dietetic Association at www.eatright.org.  Kathy Sherman, RN is a health coach working with individuals who want motivation & guidance to live a more healthier life.  https://www.fullspectrumwellness.com/bio_kathy_sherman.html
